Lately, I've started listening to music on Spotify. I must say I'm getting quite addicted. So I was on the Old School Hip hop playlist. I listening to "No Diggity" and I have an app that simultaneously puts up the lyrics to any song I'm listening to. I was listening to the song and forever I have been saying "No diggity, I got to back it up" when it's actually "I got to bag it up."
I was looking at the lyrics like " no this has to be wrong." I look it up on Google and sure enough "bag it up" is correct. I went on rap genius and "No diggity I got to bag it up" means "no doubt I have to put on a condom" since he definitely has to have to sex with this girl. I was was dumbfounded but kept listening to the song and it totally makes sense. In the beginning of the song she totally sounds like a prostitute.
It got me to wondering if it was just me who has been misquoting this song. It's not just me though, because Eh440 (the Canadian a capella group I saw earlier this week) was saying back it up too. Is "Back it up" a misquote only our generation says or does even the generation of people who actually was around when the song comes out, say it too? Comment and let me know.
